How to write a good child observation

  • Write only what you see and hear. "Maya stacked 6 blocks" is a fact. "Maya was proud" is a guess.
  • Use the child's exact words in quotes.
  • Note the date, time, place and who else was there.
  • Keep it short. Two to five sentences is enough.
  • Write it down as soon as you can.

Types of observation

  • Anecdotal record: a short story of one moment.
  • Running record: everything a child does for a set time, like 10 minutes.
  • Checklist: skills a child can or cannot do yet.
  • Work sample: a drawing, writing or photo of their work.
