Teacher tips

How to pick the right activity

1

Start with the age

An activity that suits a four-year-old can be unsafe for a one-year-old. Pick the age first.

2

Match the attention span

Plan about 5 minutes for infants, 5–10 for toddlers and 15–20 for preschoolers. Stop when interest drops.

3

Keep a rainy-day backup

Pick one indoor activity for every outdoor one, so the plan survives the weather.

4

Check the safety note

Under-3s put things in their mouths. If an item fits through a toilet-paper tube, it stays out of reach.

By age group

Daycare activities for each age group

What works changes fast in the first five years. Here is what to plan for each room.

Infant activities (0–12 months)

One-to-one and short. Tummy time with a mirror, high-contrast cards, peekaboo, board books and a buggy walk. Talk the whole time — narrating is the activity.

Toddlers (1–2 years)

Movement and repetition. Posting boxes, ball in the basket, scarf toss, counting rhymes and pouring. Expect them to do it again and again — that is the point.

More toddler activities for daycare →

Twos (2–3 years)

Sorting, matching and pretend play start to land. Playdough, color hunts, sink or float, puppet stories and obstacle courses.

More toddler activities for daycare →

Preschool (3–5 years)

Multi-step games and early academics. Letter hunts, counting collections, cutting practice, story sequencing, planting seeds and shadow tracing.

Activities in MyKidReports

Do the activity. Families see it the same minute.

MyKidReports is childcare management software. Teachers log what the children did, and it lands in the parent app as it happens.

Log it in one tap

Record an activity for one child or the whole group at once, from a phone or the classroom tablet.

Photos go straight to families

The photo lands on that child’s day and in the parent app the moment it is saved. Not in a staff phone.

Plan the week once

Keep your own activity library with ages, skills and materials, then drop activities onto each room’s Monday-to-Friday plan.

Free forever for up to 5 children. Learning plans are on Pro: $0.99 per child per month, 14-day free trial, no credit card. See pricing

For directors

Plan every room’s week in MyKidReports

This page gives you ideas for today. MyKidReports keeps your own activity library — with ages, skills, materials and teacher notes — and drops activities onto each room’s Monday-to-Friday plan, so teachers open the day with everything ready.

FAQ

Questions teachers and directors ask

What are good daycare activities for each age group?

Infants do best with short one-to-one play: tummy time, faces, simple sounds and board books. Toddlers want to move, post, pour and copy you. Twos are ready for matching, sorting, playdough and simple pretend play. Preschoolers can follow a few steps, so counting games, letter hunts, cutting practice and small science experiments work well. Tap an age in the tool above to see ideas for each group.

How long should a daycare activity last?

Keep it short and follow the child. As a practical guide, plan about 5 minutes for infants, 5–10 minutes for toddlers and 15–20 minutes for preschoolers, and stop early if interest drops. Every idea in this tool lists a planned time.

How do I keep activities safe for children under 3?

Watch for choking risks first. A simple check many centers use: if an item fits through a toilet-paper tube, keep it away from children under 3. Never leave children at water, even shallow water, and check for food allergies before any activity that uses food. Each idea here carries a teacher note where a safety step matters.

Are these activities aligned to early learning standards?

They are general ideas, each tagged by skill area, not mapped to one state’s framework. Check your state’s early learning guidelines when you plan. In MyKidReports Pro, each activity in your library carries skill tags, and teachers can open the week’s plan with early-learning standards attached.

Is there an app for tracking daycare activities and sharing them with parents?

Yes. In MyKidReports, teachers log activities, meals, naps and photos from a phone or classroom tablet, and families see each entry in the parent app as it is saved. That is free forever for up to 5 children. Weekly learning plans for every room are on MyKidReports Pro, $0.99 per child per month, with a 14-day free trial and no credit card.

Is the activity tool free? Do I need an account?

It is free and there is no sign-up. Your plan is kept only in your own browser. To download it as a PDF, we ask once for your center name, email and phone.

Can I save my activity plan?

Yes. Download it as a PDF, or email it to your director from the tool. To keep a reusable activity library and plan each room’s week, use the learning plans in MyKidReports Pro — $0.99 per child per month, with a 14-day free trial.
